Maria Savova, Jason S. Price awarded 2020 Edward Swanson Memorial Best of LRTS Award

CHICAGO—Maria Savova, director of Collections and Technical Services at The Claremont Colleges Library, and Jason S. Price, Ph.D., director of Licensing Services, SCELC Library Consortium, have been awarded the 2020 Edward Swanson Memorial Best of LRTS Award for their article “Redesigning the Academic Library Materials Budget for the Digital Age: Applying the Power of Faceted Classification to Acquisitions Fund Management”, which was published in Library Resources and Technical Services (LRTS), Vol. 63, No. 2 (2019). The Edward Swanson Memorial Best of LRTS Award is given to the author(s) of the best paper published each year in LRTS, the official journal of the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS). The authors will receive $250 and a citation in recognition of their work.

“Redesigning the Academic Library Materials Budget for the Digital Age: Applying the Power of Faceted Classification to Acquisitions Fund Management” recognizes that in the digital era, traditional budget structures no longer work. The authors, instead, propose a new, more detailed, yet flexible, method of academic library budgeting process that accounts for material type, material format, acquisition mode and discipline. This new method allows for more precision in planning and builds reliance on the library’s own data over time.  It is a proven method that has been in place at the Claremont Colleges for several years and is extensible to other libraries. It solves many of the challenges acquisitions and collections librarians have faced in trying to use an older model for new content types. The timeliness of the article’s focus on fund management and fiscal responsibility, as well as the authors’ straightforward presentation of the problem, challenges and solution make this article engaging to all readers and highly relevant to the profession.

The award will be presented on Saturday, June 27 at the ALCTS Awards Ceremony during the 2020 American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference & Exhibition in Chicago, IL.

The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) is the national association for information providers who work in collections and technical services, such as acquisitions, cataloging, collection development, preservation and continuing resources in digital and print formats. ALCTS is a division of the American Library Association.
