Who Manages, Who Leads? The latest eCourse from RUSA

CHICAGO- Register today for this four-week asynchronous course titled “Who Manages, Who Leads”  scheduled to begin on Monday, May 24, 2021. 

Often, new managers have little practical working knowledge of what to expect in their new role, or if they are an existing manager already in the role,they can be uncertain of the best methods to use in managing other staff, resources and services. Leaders sometimes emerge from management. yes, some leaders are born, but others can be trained.

Who Manages, Who Leads is a four-week interactive course that will introduce and enlighten both new and existing managers and leaders to theory and practice. This course benefits front-line staff that excel in their positions and are promoted to managerial positions, or for those who have a great resume, which expectedly leads to an interview- resulting in being hired into a coveted management spot. This course discusses managerial and leadership opportunities in between this spectrum, those promoted to those hired into manageent positions.

Students will explore and discuss theories of management and leadership as well, understand the differences between leadership and management and gain insight in how to move from one role to the next and how to be both simultaneously. Individual exercises will tie in practical issues that present to manager and leaders, such as hiring, firing and suggesting corrections to existing behaviors among staff.  

The instructor, Debra Lucas, has been the Head of Reference and Interlibrary Loan at D’Youville College in Buffalo, NY, since 2002. She is the author of Marketing the 21^st Century Library: the Time is Now, published by Chandos, an imprint of Elsevier. She has been an online instructor in Library Studies since 2012.

Her book chapters appear in Middle Management in Academic and Public Libraries (2011) and the 21^st Century Handbook of Anthropology (2010). Dozens of encyclopedia articles appear in the Encyclopedia of Power (2011), the Encyclopedia of Time (2009), the Encyclopedia of Anthropology (2005), and the 20^th Century Encyclopedia of Pop Culture (2000). She has also published academic journal articles in Collaborative Librarianship (2011), the Journal of Interlibrary Loan, Document Delivery & Electronic Reserve (2009), and the Journal of Library and Information Science (2007). Additionally, she served as an editor for the Journal of Library Innovation.

At D’Youville and in the surrounding communities, she routinely guest lectures in the field of librarianship and research (2007-). She graduated from the Western New York Library Resources Council Leadership Institute (2006-2007) and also was a Leadership Institute Graduation Keynote Speaker (2009). Currently she is completing studies to become a faculty governance senate parliamentarian and is writing her first fictional novel. She was awarded a Sabbatical in 2014, a Fellowship Award in 2015-2016, and was then promoted to full-librarian in 2016.

She resides in Snyder, NY with her college aged son.
