ALA welcomes new register of copyrights Shira Perlmutter

WASHINGTON – Today Librarian of Congress Dr. Carla Hayden announced her appointment of Shira Perlmutter as the next U.S. Register of Copyrights. Ms. Perlmutter comes to the position with 12 years of service as chief policy officer and director for international affairs at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

The American Library Association (ALA) congratulates Shira Perlmutter on her appointment to be the Register of Copyrights,” said ALA President Julius C. Jefferson, Jr. “Ms. Perlmutter’s work with the library community on the U.S. implementation of the Marrakesh Treaty demonstrated a commitment to improved access to information resources and reading materials for print disabled persons in the United States and around the world.

“Ms. Perlmutter’s copyright expertise and experience working closely with the Librarian of Congress are a strong foundation on which to build a world class, efficient and comprehensive digital copyright registration and records infrastructure. As digital copyright policy and modernization of the Copyright Office are at a critical stage of formation, Ms. Perlmutter’s ability to collaborate with both users of information and rights holders has the potential to bring balance to the expanding ecosystem of creators, consumers and copyright holders. ALA looks forward to working with Ms. Perlmutter and her leadership team to foster that balance.”
