U.S. Senator Mazie K. Hirono to join ALA President Patricia ‘Patty’ Wong in conversation plus more

CHICAGO — ALA President Patricia “Patty” Wong will be joined by U.S. Senator, Mazie K. Hirono in conversation at the LibLearnX: The Library Learning Experience Opening Session, Jan. 22, 9 a.m. – 10 a.m. CT. They will discuss Senator Hirono’s memoir, “Heart of Fire: An Immigrant Daughter’s Story,” a compellingly chronicle of her life as a woman coming into her own power over the course of five decades in public service, and of the mother whose courageous choices made her life possible.

ALA President Patricia “Patty” Wong will also host Professor of Ethnic Studies, University of California, Berkeley, Catherine Ceniza Choy and journalist and author William Gee Wong at Voices of Asian Americans in History and Today, an engaging discussion that will highlight the current state of affairs for Asian Americans; their place in history; influence; and how librarians and libraries can be more responsive and engaged with the community.

Artist, illustrator, and author, Charly Palmer will be a LibLearnX Theater Speaker. Palmer will discuss his author-illustrator debut, “The Legend of Gravity: A Tall Basketball Tale,” about a neighborhood basketball hero. Gravity is the new kid on the Hillside Projects basketball team, the Eagles. He once jumped so high that his teammates went out for ice cream before he came back down. It’s a clever, energetic story about the unsung superstars walking among us, complete with vivid art and heartfelt themes of teamwork, loyalty, friendship, and fun.

LibLearnX is a virtual, four-day learning conference that invites ALA members, ALA Student members and International members to contribute to the conversation and participate in real-time learning and networking activities. Designed as an active learning experience, LibLearnX offers a variety of “session types” in assorted “topics” that support a range of instructional methods.
